    Hi
I am working on A Image uploader,
My requirement is like I need to reduce the image resolution before uploading the image

So here is what exactly I am doing,
    1. Using File Reference, get the selected image
    2. Use Matrix and bitmap draw method to resize it
    3. Encode it using JPEGEncoder/PNGEncoder

But the problem, I am not able to assign data property of FileReference object, and because of that I am bound to use URLLoader POST method to upload the images to my server, again here the problem is I cant get ProgressEvent’s bytesloaded or total bytes

Some says that it is not possible, then here goes an example from SnapFish.com which does the same thing and still they are able to have a progress bar, any idea how to achive that after resizing image

a question similar to this is available at
    http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1512197/image-upload-progress-using-urlloader-as3

    • I saw some responses to your question before I was able to answer. Are those sufficient?

      • Divakarla Srinivas

Yeah the responses are there but How to make it work? Can you suggest any workaround way to get the progressevent triggered??? while uploading…

as we can’t change data property of the FileReference object!

Looking forward to get a quick response

Hi James, I’ve posted another question to StackOverflow:
    http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2969823/flex-4-getter-getting-before-setter-sets

There isn’t a good answer yet, but really I’m trying to identify an architectural pattern in Flex for using asynchronous getters/setters. I’m trying to download a XML file and create a global property from it, and then use functions in my main app to get/set it. If you have any useful resources/links to add to this question I’d really appreciate your help.

    • Hey Steve. Sorry I didn’t get to this one sooner. Looks like you got an acceptable answer. Let me know if you need me to look at it further.

    Posted a question on StackOverFlow.
Using a Flex 3 linkBar with a viewStack dataProvider, the skin for oneof my linkButtons is distorted because of the length of linkButton label. How do I control the width for linkButtons that are generated by a dataProvider?

    Thanks,
    Jim

  • Hello James,

Looks like you know your way around Java, AMF, Flex, JS, AS3… all the technologies we use and love!

I am wondering if we could BlazeDS to encode large Java arrays to AMF3 bytearrays that we can store in our database and later upload to our Flex application? This way Blaze does not have to encode the array of data on each client request. (I am talking about arrays that contain 100k Numbers, Strings or Dates)

Congrats btw on the AMF js library – impressive!

    Kind regards,

    = Dirk

    • You certainly could. Check out the Amf3Output class in BlazeDS. I can be used to create an OutputStream containing the AMF for any Object(s).

    James,

I am looking for some good marketing materials that demonstrate the strengths of Flex and when it is a good choice to pair it with Salesforce for building apps with the Force.com platform. I am currently watching your Force Platform Extreme UI: Using Adobe AIR and Flex to Make Your Apps *Bling* speech and wanted to know if there’s anything else that you have or know of that could be helpful.

I’ve posted a question on Stackoverflow.com that I’m hoping you could answer. I am having trouble with dynamically updating contents of a chart w/ Zend & PHP:

  • Farid Valipour

    Hi James.

I think you know me , I’m Farid Valipour your friend in facebook and follower in twitter.
this is important topic for me , so let me ask the question.

you know the Flash Player runt time and API are most the huge and important section of Flash Platform, we use action script 3 and MXML to use this API and make great Application for internet,Desktop and Mobile devices ,in fact the Flash Player Runtime do this job for me ,so pls let me know the Adobe engineers how make API and Runtime ?my mean what tools, language and anything else use to make this API and Runtime such as JAVA?

Looking forward to hearing you soon.
    Really appreciate

    BR
    Farid Valipour

    • I believe Flash Player and it’s APIs are primarily written in C. But you can check it out for yourself since the core APIs are open source under the Mozilla Tamarin project.

  • Tam
  • At your recent Flash Camp Talk, you hinted at the ability to call arbitrary Android APIs from Flex. Does this imply that arbitrary NDK libraries could be called?

I’ve posted this question on stackoverflow here. Thanks!

  • Hello, maybe you can answer this question for me. Why is it that most RIA enthusiast websites have a total lack of RIA features? Why is the design of this blog so boring, like most RIA blogs? Just curious…

  • Great question! In my opinion there is a huge spectrum between content and applications. We’ve tried for over ten years to use the same technology for both. The primary goal of someone interacting with text content (like my blog) is to read. A rich UI would only get in the way of the user achieving that goal. So when it comes to content, boring is good. When it comes to applications users need interactivity that helps them accomplish their goals (entering data, visualizing data, etc). RIAs are great for interactivity and engagement.

    What do you think?

    Ref post http://stackoverflow.com/questions/4255505

Yes, what I want to be able to do is to show a datagrid with say event details, but instead of just showing the Account Id I want to show the actual account name.

The problem I have is that when I add the account name to the underlying datagrid array it flags this as a change to the event data, and then when I replicate it replicates every event that had been displayed.

Is there any way to stop the changes in the arraycollection being replicated back to SalesForce

    Hi James,

I liked your presentations at RIA unleashed 2010 in Boston. I also attended the LCDS workshop by Kevin Schmidt, however I found the portable ria in pedf on your site and was curious to know do we need LCDS to be able to do that , or will BlazeDS do it for me. http://www.jamesward.com/2008/11/05/portable-rias-flex-apps-in-pdfs/
. If I need to have LCDS to be able to do it how is the PDF generation tied to server framework ?

Any insight will be greatly helpful

    -Chandu

    • In my example of Portable RIAs I use LCDS to generate the PDF. However you could also use BlazeDS and a Java PDF library like iText. The latest iText book even has an example of how to do this.

    Hi James,

Word is out that you are the man with the solution to the problem of Android Media Store access from Air, as I saw you have a hack about using Android API’s:
    http://stackoverflow.com/questions/4438896/android-mediastore-from-air-app

We cannot base our app on a hack though, as it is non trivial and for an important customer.
Also by the looks of Elram’s article the hack makes the devlopment cycle pretty complicated.
    So is there another way?

    Thanks very much, Ronnie

    • There is no other way right now. I wouldn’t consider it a hack. It’s a workaround. :) It’s totally feasible to combine a native apk with an AIR for Android apk. I’m working on an article that will provide a lot of details about how to do it. Email me if you want me to send you a draft. jaward at adobe dot com

James, I’m still stuck a bit… I did post on StackOverflow:
    http://stackoverflow.com/questions/4935030/does-the-spring-flex-1-5-sample-work

  • Jon Kocen

I am looking for an example of Flex with JSR286. I found one that explains the Flex side, which is pretty normal stuff, it uses httpservice tags to get data. I am looking for the jsp side that actually returns data. The example I have just returns environment variables, I need to return data. I will be pulling data from a web services within the portal.

    Any suggestions?

    • So you have the Flex app and it needs to get data from a JSP file using HTTPService? Or do you just need to embed the Flex app in the JSP?

    http://stackoverflow.com/questions/5035031/how-can-i-access-tomcat-bin-properties-when-running-from-inside-eclipse

    • I saw some others jumped on your question. Was it answered adequately?

      • Yes, I did get get the solution to my question. Essentially placing the properties file that my co-worker’s code expected – in \bin\ – in my Eclipse root folder , I was able to leverage my co-workers jars, that were using the file. The reason this worked, was that the co-workers code expected the file to be in the same directory Java was “started in”, so in dev & qa that’s \bin\ , but on my local machine that’s the Eclipse root folder.

        Thanks for double checking :)

        • Actually James, I’m wondering if you might be able to just look at one more code snippet for me… (and thanks again for the support earlier)

annotation on some of my interfaces. This time, I posted at the Spring Source forum. I was just hoping to have an extra set of eyes on my configuration.

  • James, I’ve got another Spring-Flex question. I consider it tricky, but maybe you can offer a tip?

I’m trying to leverage an HttpServlet invoked by a @Service. Any thoughts?

    Hi James,
I’m having problems porting a BlazeDS project from a PC to a Mac. I can’t get the request to go through AMF. It hangs in the browser and is driving me crazy. I posted a question here:

    Thanks!

      Hi James,
I saw your question on StackOverflow and I responded to it. Yes, I was using http://, not file://. If you have any idea of why it isn’t working, I’d love to hear them. I’m pretty befuddled by it. Thanks.

  • James, I hope I’m not bugging you with all the questions – I’ve got another obscure web-app question for you!

    Any thoughts?

  • Hi James,

I’ve been in a debate about the performance of AMF versus Web Services on the Adobe Flex Developer group on LinkedIn. I posted your AMF vs. WebServices benchmark tool and it would be great if you could weigh in. Here is a link to that question:

    • I’m not sure what error #204 is. Can you provide more details?

        Dear James
        Thanks for prompt reply.

My galaxy tab’s flash player work for online games and flex 3 project too.

        what you think?

does flash player for android version has any limitation for flex 4 that I dont know and does not support some component?
