RTMP Spec To Be Opened

A little over a year ago Adobe opened the AMF spec. Now Adobe has announced it will be opening the RTMP spec! Wahoo!!! This is big news for Flex developers! For those that don’t know, RTMP is the streaming protocol used for streaming video and audio in Flash Media Server and for streaming data in LiveCycle Data Services. The spec is expected to be published first half of this year.

    Does the RTMP opening includes RTMPF and all negotiation protocol around ?

    @Tek

    Good question. I’m not sure. The press release doesn’t mention RTMPF.

    It’s about time…a little late though, now that there are at least 3 products out there that have pretty much reverse-engineered it already (red5, wowza media server, electroserver). At least they’ll be able to make sure they conform to the standard now.

    Congrats! RTMP is a powerful technology. Quick question: are there any patents around RTMP on Adobe’s side? Will this also include a patent grant if so?

    Hi Brad,

    Good question. AFAIK this doesn’t include a patent grant or promise not to litigate infringements. This same question has come up with AMF, Flex, SWF, etc. I will ask some folks at Adobe about this.

    @David R Yeah but I’m sure this won’t include RTMPE. Doesn’t matter, I think Wowza has this covered as well.

    Sadly I don’t think many people realize the RTMPE implications in terms of CPU usage. Not to mention the horrible end-user experience – hardly any buffering, even if you seek backwards it freezes to re-stream etc (a couple of video sharing sites come to mind).

    Just a day ago I published a summary of references to RTMP and its implementations: http://tr.im/bc7q

    Will have to update it with a link to the official spec once it comes out.

    JW-Player can play RTMP and seems to be a popular choice.
